The term "pH" is an acronym for the "potential of Hydrogen” or the hydrion ion exponent. This potential of Hydrogen, sometimes called power Hydrogen is the acid to alkaline ratio existing in all matter. Our blood pH is most vital to our well-being, either a fraction of a point too high or too low can cause death. And this is what would happen if it weren’t for our body’s store of buffers. Organic buffers such as calcium, magnesium and potassium along with other minerals are found in abundance in our bones, teeth, organs and tissues. Think of it this way, the food you eat and the beverages you drink can either deposit alkalizing buffers or remove them from your store. If this were your bank account, it wouldn’t take long to deplete your savings if you only took withdrawals. Conversely, only making deposits and never taking money out would make you quite rich. The same can be said for your health. No one on their deathbed ever wished for more riches, all most dying people want is more time.

Values of pH are measured on a scale consisting of 14 points, containing 10 levels within each point. This means that a drop in every point on the pH scale is 10 times more acid. For example, 7 to 6 measures ten times more acid, not one, which means a drop of 7 to 5 is one hundred times more acid (10x10), not two. Neutral is 7.0, anything above (to 14) is considered alkaline, anything below (to 0) acid. The scale is represented with the use of color. Each color represents a number. The narrower the pH range the better for accurate testing. Hydrochloric Acid is red on the scale, with a pH of 0.0. Sodium Hydroxide is alkaline (base) or purple on the same scale with a pH of 14.0. Balance or neutrality is achieved with water at 7.0 (green) in the middle of the pH scale. Human blood pH has a 7.356 to 7.410 range, which is considered slightly alkaline.

Many factors influence pH levels within the body. These factors include, but are not limited to; an out of balance mineral ratio, environmental issues, medication, high acid diet, and stress levels. These are some primary concerns to look at when a person's pH level is chronically low or high. If diet changes and a reduction in stressors do not normalize a pH level, then the advice of a good health care professional with an understanding of the importance of pH balance should be consulted. If you suspect it’s a medication consult your prescribing physician. However, do not discontinue any medication without knowing the possible consequences. First do no harm.

Bottom line — if the blood does not remain at its perfect range of 7.410 going into the heart and 7.356 coming out, damage can occur to vital organs and life itself could be jeopardized. In order to maintain that ideal range for the blood, our bodies will leach the calcium and other alkalizing minerals right out of our bones, teeth, organs and tissues to correct a too acid condition. In time resulting in inflammation, osteoporosis, kidney stones, gallstones, and tooth decay to mention only a few of the consequences.

Here is one example of a soft drink beverage that makes large withdrawals from your mineral bank account. This is only one example all commercial soft drinks will have the same affect to slightly varying degrees. The active ingredient in cola beverages is phosphoric acid, in addition carbonic acid, caffeine and either high fructose corn syrup or sucrose are also part of the formula, all are highly acid with a total pH of 2.8. It takes 32 glasses of water at 7.0, to neutralize one glass of cola. Diet cola is no better. Your body believes it is starving because of the empty calories, so in response the body holds on to calories and converts them into fat to compensate. Want to gain weight, drink diet soda. It takes the body many more quarts of water to process a soda than the liquid contained in the beverage in the first place. All of the calcium and magnesium supplements in the world will not help if our body pH is running dehydrated and acid.

Optimum alkalinity at a cellular level equates to optimum health. All diseases thrive in an acidic environment. In order to strengthen adrenal function and reduce inflammation the goal is to eliminate as many stressors as possible. While at the same time increasing elements in your life that will allow you to flourish. Soft drinks are just one example of a stressor to your body. An old friend used to say that nothing worthwhile is ever easy. How true. Let’s face it, nothing makes you feel better than conquering a demon.
